Cuba Reports Deadly Firefight with Florida Speedboat, US Investigates
Cuba has announced that its military forces engaged in a violent confrontation with a Florida-registered speedboat, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries. According to the Cuban government, the incident occurred when the vessel entered Cuban territorial waters and initiated gunfire, wounding one Cuban officer. The Interior Ministry of Havana stated that the suspects detained after the exchange claimed they intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes, escalating concerns over regional security.
Details of the Incident
The shootout took place approximately one mile northeast of Cayo Falcones, off the northern coast of Cuba. Authorities reported that the boat was found equipped with assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, and other military-style equipment. All ten individuals involved were identified as Cubans residing in the United States. Among them, two men—Amijail Sanchez Gonzalez and Leordan Enrique Cruz Gomez—were named as wanted for organizing, financing, and supporting terrorist acts. Another suspect, Duniel Hernandez Santos, was arrested and confessed to facilitating the armed infiltration.
Officials provided names of seven passengers, including Conrado Galindo Sariol, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Castello, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra. One of the deceased was identified as Michel Ortega Casanova, while three others remain unnamed. The Cuban government emphasized that the investigation is ongoing to fully clarify the facts, asserting that the action was taken to safeguard national sovereignty and ensure stability in the region.
US Response and Investigation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed awareness of the incident prior to Cuba's announcement, noting that Washington is gathering its own information to determine if those involved were US citizens or permanent residents. He stressed that this was not a US government operation and refrained from speculating on the boat's purpose. Rubio described the event as highly unusual, citing that such shootouts in open sea are rare and have not occurred with Cuba in a long time.
Rubio indicated that US agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Coast Guard, are investigating independently to verify facts provided by Cuba. In Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier ordered prosecutors to collaborate with federal and state law-enforcement partners to launch an investigation, expressing distrust toward the Cuban government. US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged being briefed by Rubio, with the White House monitoring developments and hoping the situation is not as severe as feared.
Broader Implications for US-Cuba Relations
This incident occurs amid heightened tensions between the United States and Cuba, exacerbated by recent US policies under former President Donald Trump. Following the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump adopted a harder stance toward Cuba, which had relied on Venezuelan oil. Last month, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba, worsening the island's energy crisis and increasing pressure on nations like Mexico.
Historically, clashes between Cuban forces and US-flagged speedboats have involved smuggling or cargo transport, but recent events have not included passengers opening fire or fatalities. The current firefight threatens to further strain diplomatic relations, with both sides emphasizing sovereignty and security concerns. As investigations proceed, the international community watches closely for potential escalations in this volatile bilateral dynamic.
