India has raised serious and urgent concerns at the United Nations regarding escalating threats to commercial shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. During a UN General Assembly debate on "The Situation in the Middle East," India's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Harish P, called for the immediate restoration of safe navigation and emphasized the critical need for restraint and de-escalation amid ongoing regional tensions.
Maritime Security Vital for India's Energy and Economic Interests
Ambassador Harish underscored that maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz is fundamentally crucial for India's energy security and broader economic interests. "An aspect of particular concern for India, for its energy and economic security, relates to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz," he stated. The ambassador deplored the targeting of commercial vessels in military attacks during the conflict, a development India finds deeply troubling.
Strong Condemnation of Attacks on Civilian Maritime Activity
India has issued a strong condemnation of attacks directed at civilian maritime operations, labeling such actions as completely unacceptable. "We reiterate that the targeting of commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members or otherwise impeding the freedom of navigation and commerce in the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable," Ambassador Harish declared. He stressed the imperative of adhering to international law and urged the global community to ensure the free and unimpeded movement of trade through this essential waterway.
"International law in this regard must be fully respected. We strongly urge that safe and unimpeded freedom of navigation and global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz be restored at the earliest," he emphasized, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Human Toll: Indian Lives Lost in the Conflict
The ambassador also brought attention to the severe human cost of the conflict, revealing that Indian nationals have been directly affected. "The precious lives of Indian seafarers aboard ships have been lost during the course of the conflict," he added, underscoring the personal tragedies behind the geopolitical tensions.
Call for Restraint, Diplomacy, and Respect for Sovereignty
Referring to the broader conflict involving Iran and the Gulf region, Ambassador Harish reiterated India's consistent diplomatic stance. "Since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran and the Gulf region on the 28th of February 2026, India had expressed deep concern and urged all states to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize safety of civilians," he stated.
He further elaborated, "We have urged all states to promote dialogue and diplomacy and de-escalation of tensions and to purposefully address underlying issues." Reaffirming India's principled position, the ambassador called for respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations involved.
