Rubio Reaffirms US Commitment to Gulf Allies
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Wednesday that the United States will not take any action that would undermine the security of Gulf nations. Speaking to reporters in Kuwait, Rubio emphasized Washington's longstanding commitment to its allies in the region, amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
"If Iran wants to make a good and real deal, the United States is open to that. If they're not, then of course the President has options," Rubio said, according to Reuters. His remarks come as diplomatic efforts to revive the nuclear agreement remain stalled.
Open to Diplomacy, But Prepared for Alternatives
Rubio's comments signal a dual-track approach: openness to negotiations while maintaining a credible threat of military or economic action. He reiterated that any deal must address not only Iran's nuclear program but also its ballistic missile development and support for proxy forces across the Middle East.
The top US diplomat made clear that Gulf security is a red line. "We will not compromise the safety of our partners," he added. The statement aligns with recent US deployments of naval assets to the region.
Regional Reactions and Implications
Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have welcomed Rubio's assurance. Analysts say the US position aims to reassure allies worried about a potential US-Iran rapprochement that might leave them vulnerable.
Iran has yet to officially respond to Rubio's latest remarks. However, Tehran has previously insisted on the complete lifting of sanctions as a precondition for negotiations. The window for diplomacy appears narrow, with the US presidential election cycle adding urgency.
