In a strongly worded statement, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazrouei accused Iran of weaponising energy by effectively taking the Strait of Hormuz hostage. Speaking at a global energy forum, Al Mazrouei emphasised that the UAE remains a responsible player in the energy sector despite regional tensions.
Energy as a Weapon
Al Mazrouei stated, "Energy has been weaponised by Hormuz being taken hostage effectively." He highlighted that the strategic waterway, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes, has been used as a tool for political leverage. The minister criticised actions that threaten the free flow of energy, calling them detrimental to global stability and economic growth.
UAE's Responsible Role
Contrasting Iran's approach, Al Mazrouei asserted, "We are a responsible player in the energy space." The UAE has invested heavily in diversifying its energy mix, including renewable sources, and has advocated for dialogue and cooperation to ensure energy security. The minister reiterated the UAE's commitment to maintaining stable energy markets and supporting global efforts to transition to cleaner energy.
Regional Implications
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, where Iran has been accused of seizing tankers and disrupting shipping lanes. The UAE, a key OPEC member, has called for de-escalation and adherence to international maritime laws. Al Mazrouei warned that continued instability could have severe consequences for the global economy, particularly for developing nations reliant on affordable energy.
Call for International Action
The minister urged the international community to take a firm stance against the weaponisation of energy resources. He proposed multilateral frameworks to safeguard critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz and ensure unimpeded transit. Al Mazrouei also emphasised the importance of investing in alternative energy routes and technologies to reduce dependence on volatile regions.
Al Mazrouei concluded by reaffirming the UAE's dedication to being a reliable energy partner, stating, "We will continue to play our part in ensuring energy reaches those who need it, without political strings attached."
