Chinese and Indian Tourists Top Spenders in US Despite Trump's 'Hellholes' Remark
Chinese, Indian Tourists Top US Spenders Despite Insults

A recent study by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) has revealed that visitors from China and India are the biggest spenders in the United States, despite being described as coming from 'hellholes' in a remark reposted by former President Donald Trump. The study estimated the economic impact of overseas travelers and found that these two nations lead in terms of expenditure.

Top Spending Countries

According to the NTTO study, visitor spending by the top 10 overseas countries accounted for 59% of total overseas spending in the US. The list includes China, India, the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Korea, Germany, Japan, Australia, Italy, and Colombia. These countries collectively contribute a significant portion of the revenue generated by international tourism.

Economic Impact of Overseas Visitors

The NTTO report states, 'These new estimates capture overseas visitor spending on travel-related goods and services in each US state and territory, as well as the local employment supported by this spending.' In 2024, the US welcomed over 35 million visitors from overseas, excluding those from neighboring Canada and Mexico who arrive by land. These visitors spent a total of $169.8 billion on travel-related goods and services, including spending by international students on education. This expenditure directly supported nearly 906,000 jobs across the US economy.

Top States for Visitor Spending

In terms of overseas visitor spending, the top five states — New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Massachusetts — collectively received $99.7 billion, accounting for 58.7% of total overseas visitor spending in the US. These states remain the most popular destinations for international tourists due to their attractions, business opportunities, and educational institutions.

Decline in Indian Visitors

While India is one of the top overseas markets for inbound visitors to the US, the growth in numbers seen over the past few years has declined due to several factors. These include challenges in visa issuance, increased airfare, and reduced connectivity. The study highlights the importance of addressing these issues to maintain and boost tourism from key markets like India.
