The Consulate General of Italy in Kolkata hosted a reception on Sunday afternoon to commemorate Italy's National Day and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Italian Republic. The event was held at Crystal Hall, Taj Bengal, bringing together diplomats, government representatives, business leaders, members of the cultural community, and invited guests for an afternoon of celebration. The gathering reflected on the longstanding ties between Italy and India while showcasing Italian culture, heritage, and friendship.
Flavors of Italy on Display
Guests were treated to a selection of Italian specialties, with live cooking stations serving freshly prepared pasta, gnocchi, and grilled dishes. The menu included Bucatini all'Amatriciana made with smoked pancetta, pumpkin and ricotta ravioli tossed in burnt butter and sage, and mushroom and spinach gnocchi. At the live grill counter, Italian sausages flavored with chili and fennel were served alongside herb mustard and caramelized onions, while Betki alla Salmoriglio offered a local twist inspired by the classic Sicilian preparation.
The beverage selection showcased Italian wines and spirits, including Ribolla Gialla Brut sparkling wine, Pinot Grigio white wine, and Cabernet Ca' Stele red wine. Guests could also sample Birra Peroni beer, traditional aperitifs such as Sanbitter and Crodino, and classic Italian digestifs including Marsala, Amaretto di Saronno, and Limoncello.
A Partnership Strengthened by Shared Priorities
Speaking on the evolving relationship between the two nations, Riccardo Dalla Costa, Consul General of Italy in Kolkata, said that India and Italy are now closer than ever before. He pointed to the recent engagements between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which have elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership. "India and Italy are today closer than ever before. The recent meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have further strengthened our political ties, elevating them to a strategic partnership. This reflects not only the excellent relations between our governments but also the shared values and common interests that unite our countries," he said.
Emphasizing the similarities between the two nations, Dalla Costa noted that both countries are vibrant democracies with converging priorities on the global stage. "Italy and India are two vibrant democracies that increasingly find themselves aligned on many of the key challenges and priorities of the global agenda. Whether it is innovation, sustainability, economic cooperation, or cultural exchange, we see enormous opportunities to work together," he added.
Highlighting the role of the Consulate General in Kolkata, he said that efforts to strengthen ties extend beyond diplomacy. "Here in Kolkata, the Consulate General of Italy remains committed to deepening these connections through a wide range of initiatives spanning culture, education, business, science, and cuisine. We believe that meaningful partnerships are built through dialogue and people-to-people exchanges," he said, adding that Italy and Kolkata share "a rich cultural heritage, a love for art, creativity and gastronomy, and a strong sense of identity rooted in history and tradition."
India and Italy share a relationship rooted in centuries of cultural exchange, trade, and mutual respect.
