Footage widely shared on social media captures festival-goers scrambling for cover as gunfire rang out near the annual Old West End Festival. The Toledo Police Department responded to reports of a shooting around 5:30 p.m. local time, discovering multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Several injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Multiple Shooters Suspected

Authorities believe more than one shooter may have been involved. Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan stated during a briefing, "It appears as though there were at least two shooters, I think they were probably shooting at each other." As of Saturday night, no suspects had been taken into custody, and the investigation remains active.

The Old West End Festival is a two-day community event in Toledo's historic district, featuring live music, food vendors, shopping, and home tours. Witnesses reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire before crowds began fleeing. Kevin Berry, a festival attendee, recounted that people immediately dropped to the ground when shots were fired.

Governor Responds

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine emphasized that summer festivals should remain safe spaces for families and expressed confidence that law enforcement would identify those responsible. This incident is among over 170 mass shootings recorded in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people are shot.
