Three church leaders were killed in an ambush in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Tuesday, police said. The incident occurred around 10:30 am when the victims were traveling in a vehicle near the village of T. Waichong. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, killing all three occupants on the spot.
Details of the Attack
The deceased have been identified as Pastor Thangkhosei, Pastor Thangkhomang, and Evangelist Thangkhopao, all associated with the local Baptist church. They were returning from a prayer meeting when they were ambushed. The attackers fled the scene after the shooting.
Police Investigation
Police have launched a search operation to nab the perpetrators. Senior police officers have visited the spot and are investigating the motive behind the attack. Preliminary reports suggest that the killing could be linked to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. However, no group has claimed responsibility so far.
The incident has sparked outrage among local Christian communities. Protests have erupted in several parts of the district, with people demanding justice for the slain leaders. The state government has condemned the attack and assured strict action against the culprits.
Background of Ethnic Tensions
Manipur has been witnessing sporadic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023. The conflict has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands. The church leaders belonged to the Kuki community, which has been targeted in several attacks. The killing is seen as an escalation of the ongoing strife.
Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any further violence. The state government has appealed for calm and urged people not to take the law into their own hands.
