A tense standoff between India's Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at multiple locations along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal has de-escalated after more than 40 Bangladeshi nationals stranded at border zero points reportedly returned to Bangladesh.
Key Incidents Along the Border
The most significant confrontation occurred in Cooch Behar's Mekhliganj sector, where BGB initially refused to accept a group of individuals, alleging they were being illegally pushed back from India. Similar situations were reported in Sitalkuchi, Dinhata, and Jalpaiguri, leading to heightened tensions between the two border forces.
BSF and BGB Claims
While the BSF stated that the stranded individuals have now returned to Bangladesh, the BGB claimed it foiled eight separate push-back attempts within a 24-hour period. The differing accounts highlight ongoing friction over border management and undocumented immigration.
Broader Context of Deportation Efforts
The developments come amid intensified efforts by Indian authorities to identify and deport undocumented immigrants. The central government has urged Dhaka to expedite nationality verification procedures to streamline the process and avoid such standoffs in the future.
The easing of tension at the border provides temporary relief, but the underlying issues of illegal immigration and verification delays remain unresolved, requiring continued diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
