A tragic road accident in Pathanamthitta district claimed the lives of a man and his daughter in the early hours of Sunday. The incident occurred when the car they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck near Kalanjoor along the Punalur-Muvattupuzha road. Two other occupants sustained serious injuries.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Sundar Raj, 55, and his daughter Janani, 30. According to sources, Janani's brother, who was also in the car, was rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital with serious injuries. Another passenger, identified as Pranav, was taken to Punalur taluk hospital where he is recovering from his injuries.
Details of the Accident
The accident took place around 2:30 am when the family was traveling from Sivakasi to Aluva. The impact of the collision was so severe that the car was crushed, requiring fire and rescue personnel to cut open the vehicle to extricate the passengers. The bodies will be handed over to the family after an autopsy.
Suspected Cause
It is suspected that the truck driver dozed off, leading to the collision. Following the crash, the truck overturned into a canal. The truck was laden with hay, which became waterlogged, making it difficult to lift the vehicle out of the water. Eventually, a crane was used to retrieve the truck. Those in the truck sustained only minor injuries.
