Lonavala received a staggering 600mm of rainfall within 24 hours, leading to multiple landslides across Pune district and severely disrupting rail traffic on the crucial Mumbai-Pune route. The Central Railway had deployed stationary watchmen at all vulnerable locations in the ghat section in anticipation of heavy rainfall, as per a PTI report.
Landslides and Impact on Rail Traffic
The incessant downpour triggered several landslides in the hilly terrain around Lonavala, blocking railway tracks and causing delays and cancellations of trains. The Pune-Mumbai railway line, a vital artery for commuters and freight, faced significant disruption as debris from the landslides covered the tracks. Railway officials worked round the clock to clear the debris and restore services.
According to the Central Railway, stationary watchmen were stationed at identified vulnerable points in the ghat section to monitor the situation and alert authorities in case of any untoward incident. This proactive measure helped in early detection of landslides, although the sheer volume of rain overwhelmed some sections.
Response and Restoration Efforts
The Indian Railways mobilized teams to clear the tracks and assess the damage. Heavy machinery was deployed to remove boulders and mud from the rail lines. Meanwhile, the Pune district administration issued warnings to residents in low-lying areas and advised against unnecessary travel. Local authorities also monitored dam water levels and river flows to prevent flooding.
A Central Railway official stated, “We have stationed watchmen at all vulnerable locations in the ghat section. Our teams are working to restore normalcy as soon as possible.” The official added that passengers were being informed about the delays and alternative arrangements were made where feasible.
Wider Impact and Precautions
The heavy rainfall also affected road traffic, with several roads in the region becoming slippery or waterlogged. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Pune and surrounding areas, predicting continued heavy rainfall. The administration urged people to stay indoors and avoid venturing near landslide-prone zones.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of the Western Ghats region to extreme weather events, particularly during the monsoon season. The combination of steep terrain and intense rainfall often leads to landslides, disrupting transportation and posing risks to life and property.
