Ambush in Ukhrul: Two Assam Rifles personnel killed
Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and several others injured in a militant ambush in Manipur's Ukhrul district on July 6, 2026. The attack took place near the Myanmar border when a patrol team was targeted by suspected militants.
Details of the attack
According to defence officials, the ambush occurred around 10:30 am in the general area of Shirui village. The militants opened fire on the patrol party, leading to an exchange of fire. Two soldiers succumbed to their injuries, while three others were wounded and are being treated at a military hospital.
Security forces launch search operation
Security forces have launched a massive search operation in the area to track down the attackers. The identity of the militant group is yet to be confirmed, but officials suspect the involvement of local insurgent groups active in the region.
“The incident is a cowardly act of violence. We will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” said a senior Assam Rifles officer, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Impact on security situation
The attack highlights the volatile security situation in Manipur's hill districts, where multiple insurgent groups operate. The Assam Rifles has been conducting counter-insurgency operations in the area, and this ambush is seen as a setback. The injured personnel are reported to be stable.
