The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has officially commenced its comprehensive annual maintenance dredging programme, marking a significant step in the ongoing battle against coastal erosion along the scenic shoreline of Visakhapatnam. This ambitious project forms the cornerstone of a dedicated beach nourishment initiative designed to preserve and protect the city's valuable coastal assets.

With an estimated budget of nearly Rs 83 crore, this vital coastal management project is scheduled for implementation over a three-year period, extending through to 2028. Annually, the programme will involve the removal of approximately 2.5 lakh cubic metres of silt and sand from the designated sand trap area located within the port's outer harbour. The process, scientifically known as beach nourishment, serves to replenish sand that is naturally depleted by tidal movements, ocean currents, and various coastal processes. This method has proven effective in restoring and maintaining beach integrity in coastal regions worldwide.
