Uttarakhand Battles Unseasonal Heat as Temperatures Spike 10°C Above Normal

Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand have been grappling with a significant and unseasonal rise in daytime temperatures, with mercury levels soaring between 3°C to a staggering 10°C above the normal range for this time of year. However, meteorologists from the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional centre in Dehradun have announced that relief is on the horizon. A series of three consecutive weather systems is expected to impact the region between March 8 and March 16, potentially bringing much-needed respite from the prevailing warm conditions.

Immediate Forecast and Temperature Trends

According to officials, no significant change in maximum temperatures is anticipated over the next two to three days. The state will continue to experience elevated heat levels during this period. However, a shift is expected as a series of western disturbances begins to influence the western Himalayan region. These weather systems are predicted to introduce increased cloudiness, light rainfall, and a gradual decline in temperatures across Uttarakhand.

"We are expecting two to three spells of rain and thunderstorms between March 8 and March 16, with peak activity likely between March 12 and March 15," stated CS Tomar, director of the regional meteorological centre. This forecast offers hope for residents and ecosystems affected by the abnormal warmth.

Detailed Temperature Anomalies Across the State

IMD data reveals the extent of the temperature deviation. On Thursday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 31°C, which is approximately 5°C above the normal seasonal average. In the plains, Pantnagar registered a high of 30.2°C, nearly 3°C above what is typically expected.

The temperature departure was even more pronounced in the hill stations of Uttarakhand. Mukteshwar experienced a maximum temperature of 25.8°C, marking a 10°C deviation above normal and representing the highest anomaly among all monitored stations. New Tehri recorded a maximum of 22.6°C, about 3°C above its usual range.

A slight reprieve was observed on Friday as cloud cover increased across the hills and adjoining foothill areas. Mukteshwar's temperature dipped to 19°C, though it still remained about 3°C above normal. Meanwhile, temperatures in Dehradun, Pantnagar, and New Tehri showed little change compared to previous days, indicating the persistent nature of the warm spell.

Meteorological Explanation and Future Outlook

Meteorologists attribute the earlier sharp rise in temperatures to clear skies and prevailing dry weather conditions across the region. "The temperatures, particularly the maximum ones, were hovering above normal across the state. However, they have now stabilised and are not expected to rise further," explained Tomar. This stabilization suggests that the peak of the heatwave may have passed, setting the stage for the incoming weather systems to moderate conditions.

The anticipated western disturbances are expected to bring not only precipitation but also a cooling effect, which will be crucial for agriculture, water resources, and public health in Uttarakhand. Residents are advised to stay updated with IMD forecasts as the weather patterns evolve over the coming days.
