The Uttar Pradesh Nature and Bird Festival 2025, organized under the evocative theme ‘Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage’, successfully commemorated World Wetlands Day on Monday. The vibrant event was held at the scenic Mahavir Swami Wildlife Sanctuary located in Deogarh, within the Lalitpur district, drawing a diverse and enthusiastic crowd.
A Collective Celebration of Biodiversity and Conservation
The festival served as a powerful convergence point for nature lovers, avid birding enthusiasts, students from various institutions, dynamic youth groups, and engaged local communities. This gathering underscored a shared commitment to celebrating the region's rich biodiversity, advancing conservation efforts, and promoting sustainable eco-tourism practices. The collective energy highlighted the growing public interest in environmental stewardship.
Ministerial Vision for Eco-Tourism and Heritage
Addressing the assembled gathering, Uttar Pradesh's Tourism and Culture Minister, Jaiveer Singh, articulated the festival's broader significance. He emphasized that the event reflects the synergistic commitment of the state's Tourism and Forest departments towards robustly promoting eco-tourism across Uttar Pradesh.
Minister Singh highlighted that the Bundelkhand region is being strategically positioned on the global eco-tourism map, with Deogarh playing a pivotal role due to its exceptional blend of natural and cultural assets. The festival lays a crucial foundation for fostering long-term public awareness about the importance of wetlands, wildlife protection, and the principles of responsible tourism, he added.
Deogarh's Unique Cultural and Natural Tapestry
Elaborating on Deogarh's significance, Minister Singh painted a vivid picture of a region steeped in history, spirituality, and vibrant culture. He pointed to its ancient Jain temples, historic Buddhist caves, the renowned Dashavatar Temple, and the rich biodiversity supported by the Betwa River. This combination offers visitors a rare and immersive experience where heritage seamlessly intertwines with nature.
The minister further noted that Lalitpur district holds immense, untapped tourism potential. Festivals like this one are instrumental in providing visitors with engaging, immersive experiences such as guided birdwatching tours, serene nature walks, and educational wetland-based activities.
Strategic Initiatives and Future Roadmap
Speaking on the occasion of World Wetlands Day, Minister Jaiveer Singh outlined the state's progressive vision. Following successful initiatives like ‘One District One Product’ and ‘One District One Cuisine’, Uttar Pradesh is now advancing towards the ambitious goal of ‘One District One Wetland’.
A key strategy involves actively engaging youth tourism clubs to nurture the next generation of eco-tourism brand ambassadors. This includes organizing exposure visits for students to bird sanctuaries and other natural sites, alongside school-level competitions designed to foster conservation awareness from an early age.
Infrastructure Development and Global Outreach
The minister provided concrete details on the state's action plan. The Forest Department has already identified 52 significant wetlands across Uttar Pradesh, with a consensus reached on developing basic tourism facilities around these vital ecosystems. Furthermore, tourism infrastructure will be strengthened around the state's 11 internationally recognized Ramsar sites and its four tiger reserves.
To give Uttar Pradesh's natural heritage global visibility, familiarization tours are being organized for domestic and international tour operators. Recent successful visits by delegates from the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and the United States have already begun to yield results, with UP destinations being incorporated into international travel itineraries.
Emphasis on Harmony and Youth Participation
Also addressing the festival gathering, Minister Arun Saxena stated that the event showcases Uttar Pradesh's unwavering commitment to biodiversity conservation and maintaining environmental balance. He stressed the importance of encouraging active youth participation in nature protection initiatives.
Krishna Pal Malik, the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, delivered a poignant message on sustainable development. He asserted that all developmental progress must advance in harmony with nature and underscored the critical importance of conserving wetlands, forests, and crucial bird habitats for future generations.
