UAE's Unyielding Defence: Apache Helicopters Target Iranian Shahed Drones

In a bold display of military readiness, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has publicly released footage showcasing its air force's successful interception of multiple Iranian drones attempting to target Gulf nations. The UAE Ministry of Defence shared a video on social media platform X, highlighting Apache combat helicopters engaging and destroying approaching unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with precision maneuvers.

"Footage showing the UAE’s air defences intercepting and destroying Iranian UAVs that attempted to target the country," stated the ministry. "There is no compromise when it comes to the nation’s security and sovereignty. The UAE Armed Forces stand ready to deter any threat," it added, underscoring a firm stance amid escalating regional conflicts.

Escalating Threats and Interception Success

This development follows a recent barrage by Iran, which launched at least 16 ballistic missiles and over 117 drones, as reported by UAE defence authorities. While most drones were neutralized, four managed to land on UAE soil, highlighting the persistent nature of the threat. In the ongoing Middle East turmoil, Iran has deployed Shahed-136 one-way attack drones, designed as loitering munitions to strike targets and explode on impact, targeting US bases, oil infrastructure, and civilian buildings across the Gulf.

The United States and its allies have primarily relied on Patriot air-defence systems to counter these threats. According to UAE defence officials, interception rates have surpassed 90 per cent, demonstrating the effectiveness of these American-made systems. However, a significant economic concern has emerged: destroying a drone valued at approximately $20,000 with a missile costing around $4 million creates a stark resource imbalance, forcing defenders to expend far more than attackers.

Apache Helicopters: Advanced Capabilities and Upgrades

The UAE has operated Apache helicopters since the early 1990s, with the fleet undergoing substantial upgrades over the years. Initially upgraded to the AH-64D standard, it has now advanced to the latest AH-64E Guardian variant. Boeing delivered the first AH-64E Guardian to the UAE in August 2023, enhancing the nation's aerial combat prowess.

Equipped with a 30-millimetre M230 chain gun, AGM-114 Hellfire guided missiles, and 70-millimetre rockets, these attack helicopters are formidable assets. The US Army is also focusing on bolstering the Apache's drone-defence capabilities. At Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, the new 30×113 millimetre XM1225 APEX (Aviation Proximity Explosive) ammunition was tested in a live-fire exercise for the first time. During trials, an Apache successfully engaged unmanned aerial systems (UAS) at various distances using proximity-fused munitions.

Innovative Ammunition for Drone Defence

The XM1225 APEX round, developed by the Product Manager Medium Caliber Ammunition at Picatinny Arsenal, is specifically designed to counter drones, exposed infantry, and small boats. It can be integrated with the Apache’s M230 gun system without requiring modifications to the weapon or fire-control system. Extensive safety and functional testing is underway to ensure reliable operational performance, marking a step forward in cost-effective defence solutions.

As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, the UAE's proactive measures and technological advancements in air defence highlight a commitment to safeguarding its territory against evolving threats. The combination of advanced Apache helicopters and innovative ammunition underscores a strategic approach to maintaining security in a volatile region.
