Bolstering Drone Operations Against al-Qaeda-Linked Group
The deployment of a few F-16 jets is designed to strengthen Turkish drone operations targeting al-Shabaab, an Islamist militant group affiliated with al-Qaeda. For over two decades, al-Shabaab has been waging a persistent insurgency against the Somali government based in Mogadishu.
Mogadishu serves as the location for Turkey's largest overseas military base, underscoring Ankara's deep military footprint in the region. Additionally, Turkey is constructing a nearby facility dedicated to testing missiles and space rockets, further cementing its presence.

This military move follows recent collaborative strikes between Turkey and the United States against al-Shabaab in Somalia, where the U.S. also targets Islamic State fighters. In a parallel development, Somalia's cabinet this week replaced the head of the army, appointing Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud to succeed Odowaa Yusuf Rageh immediately.
