Major Grass Fire Erupts on Trichy Hill, Extinguished After Three-Hour Operation
A significant grass fire broke out on a hill near Thuvarankurichi in Trichy district on Thursday night, prompting an emergency response from local fire services. The incident, which occurred close to Goundampatti village in the Marungapuri block, required extensive efforts to contain and extinguish the flames.
Emergency Response and Firefighting Challenges
The Thuvarankurichi fire station received an alert about the blaze around 9:30 PM. A team of six firefighters immediately responded, arriving at the village in a fire truck. However, they encountered significant challenges due to the rough terrain, which prevented the vehicle from reaching the hill directly.
The firefighters had to walk approximately 200 meters to the fire site, wearing personal protective suits to ensure their safety. Upon arrival, they discovered that lemongrass covering much of the hill was primarily fueling the fire, creating intense heat and rapid spread.
Collaborative Efforts to Control the Blaze
Due to difficulties in extending hoses from the fire truck to the exact location of the flames, the team had to explore alternative methods. With assistance from about 10 forest department personnel, they implemented a strategic approach to prevent further spread.
- Firefighters and forest personnel uprooted nearby shrubs and plants.
- They gathered the vegetation into controlled heaps.
- These heaps were used to create firebreaks, effectively containing the blaze.
This collaborative effort proved crucial in managing the situation, as the combined teams worked tirelessly through the night.
Successful Extinguishment and Investigation
The fire was successfully extinguished by approximately 1 AM, marking the end of a three-hour operation. Officials confirmed that there were no reports of wildlife casualties, which is a significant relief given the hill's natural habitat.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Initial suspicions point to possible human involvement, with officials considering that some locals may have intentionally started the fire. The motive could be to protect crops from damage or invasion by gaurs (Indian bison), though this remains under scrutiny.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency services in remote and rugged terrains, while also underscoring the importance of community awareness in fire prevention. The successful outcome without wildlife harm is being praised as a testament to the effective coordination between fire and forest departments.
