Heavy Rainfall Lashes Tirunelveli & Tenkasi, Dams See Water Level Rise
Tirunelveli, Tenkasi Receive Heavy Rainfall; Dams Fill

Several areas in the Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu experienced substantial rainfall over the weekend, leading to a welcome rise in water levels across major reservoirs in the region. The showers, which began on Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, brought relief and replenished water sources.

Rainfall Data: Oothu Records Highest Precipitation

The rainfall was not uniformly distributed, with some regions receiving significantly more downpour than others. In Tirunelveli district, Oothu recorded the highest rainfall at 48mm, closely followed by Nalumukku at 43mm. Areas like Kakkachi and Mancholai also saw considerable showers of 40mm and 32mm respectively till Sunday afternoon.

Other parts of the district received moderate rainfall, ranging between 9mm to 15mm. The Tirunelveli town area recorded 9mm, while Papanasam received 15mm of rain.

Dam Levels Show Promising Increase

The consistent rainfall has had a direct and positive impact on the water storage in key dams across both districts. Authorities reported a noticeable increase in reservoir levels.

In Tirunelveli district:

  • Papanasam Dam: The water level rose to 124 feet against its full capacity of 143 feet.
  • Servalar Dam: The reservoir level reached 133.27 feet, with its maximum level being 156 feet.
  • Manimuthar Dam: The water level was recorded at 104.70 feet, while its maximum level is 118 feet.

In Tenkasi district, the situation was similarly encouraging:

  • Kadana Dam: The level was measured at 82 feet, nearing its maximum capacity of 84.30 feet.
  • Rama River Dam: The water level stood at 74 feet against a maximum of 84 feet.
  • Adavinainar Dam: It recorded a level of 111.25 feet, with its full level marked at 132.22 feet.

Tenkasi District Receives Moderate Showers

While the rainfall in Tenkasi district was less intense compared to parts of Tirunelveli, it was still significant. Kadana area received 13mm of rain, while Aayikudi recorded 8.5mm. The Karuppa river area saw 4mm of rainfall. Other locations, including Tenkasi and Sivagiri, registered lighter showers of about 1mm each.

The timely rainfall is expected to benefit agriculture and improve the groundwater table in these regions. Officials are monitoring the dam levels closely as the inflow continues.
