In a heartening development for wildlife conservation, the Kheoni wildlife sanctuary located in Dewas district has celebrated the arrival of three new tiger cubs. The birth is attributed to tigress Meera, who successfully delivered the healthy offspring, marking a pivotal milestone for the sanctuary's local ecosystem and biodiversity preservation efforts.
Camera Trap Footage Confirms Birth and Health of Cubs
The presence of the cubs was officially verified through advanced camera trap technology, which captured clear footage of the three tiny cubs feeding on prey. This visual evidence strongly indicates that the cubs are in good health and are beginning to adapt to their natural wild environment. Parentage and Birth Details Revealed by Officials
According to sanctuary superintendent Vikash Mahorey, the cubs are the offspring of tigress Meera and tiger Yuvraj. Mahorey disclosed that the birth occurred approximately four months ago. During this initial period, Meera remained highly elusive and vigilant, taking extensive measures to protect her young from potential threats. "Now that the cubs have grown sufficiently to start consuming solid food, Meera's ‘secret' was finally caught on camera," Mahorey explained, highlighting the natural protective instincts of the tigress.
Successful Breeding Reflects Healthy Sanctuary Environment
Divisional Forest Officer Amit Singh emphasized that the successful breeding event is a positive indicator of a robust prey base and a secure, well-managed environment within the 134-square-kilometer sanctuary. Following the confirmation of the cubs' movement through the camera traps, authorities have initiated round-the-clock monitoring of the area. This enhanced surveillance aims to meticulously track the movements of tigress Meera and her cubs, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Sanctuary's Rich Biodiversity and Tiger Population
The Kheoni wildlife sanctuary is currently home to an estimated population of approximately 12 tigers. Beyond tigers, the sanctuary's diverse ecosystem supports a wide array of fauna, contributing to its ecological richness. This includes various carnivorous species such as sloth bears, hyenas, jackals, leopards, and wild cats.
