Guwahati: Saplings of valuable fruit-bearing and medicinal trees have been planted across several old and well-known government school campuses in the city, adding fresh greenery and purpose to their historic grounds.
Rotary Club and Neeramoy Initiative
The Rotary Club of Guwahati, along with Neeramoy, organised a plantation and art programme at Panbazar Higher Secondary School. The event began with the planting of fruit and medicinal trees such as mango, guava, tamarind, jackfruit, xililkha, blackberry, bhumura, and others, followed by an art competition designed to promote awareness of environmental conservation and sustainable living.
A highlight of the day was the art competition for students of Classes VI to VIII, where more than 100 participants showcased drawings and paintings on environmental themes.
Marking World Environment Day, Rotary Club president Manoj Kumar Das said, “The event concluded on a positive note, with participants and organisers reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable practices for a greener future.”
Voice of Environment Drive
Meanwhile, the Voice of Environment — a scientific and environmental research organisation — organised a plantation drive and environmental education programme at Assam Railway Higher Secondary School in Panbazar. To build students’ interest and connect young minds with nature, the programme began with a pledge-taking session led by principal Hem Chandra Kakati. This was followed by a sapling plantation and identification drive under the guidance of environmentalist Moharana Choudhury.
Each sapling was planted by students from different classes: Sweta Bharti (Class VI) planted a guava, Anuskha Basfor (Class V) an Indian olive, Lakhyajoyti Biswas (Class V) an amla, Amile Bhowmick (Class VI) a Krishnachura (Royal Poinciana), and Pallavi Basfor (Class VII) a neem (margosa) sapling, joined by other students and teachers.
