Odisha Forest Minister Urges Heightened Vigilance Amid Rising Forest Fire Incidents
Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia expressed profound concern on Tuesday regarding the escalating frequency of forest fires across Odisha in recent years. Addressing a conference of Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs), he directed officials in fire-prone regions to enhance their vigilance and preparedness.
Comprehensive Strategy to Address Climate Change and Livelihoods
The minister emphasized the necessity of realigning departmental programs to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change. He advocated for the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities for relocated villagers through initiatives such as the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Project (OFSDP). Additionally, Singhkhuntia called for robust measures to strengthen the department's human resources, ensuring effective implementation of conservation efforts.
Focus on Elephant Conservation and Environmental Balance
In response to rising elephant fatalities, the minister proposed a detailed review and improved coordination with the electricity department. He stressed the importance of monitoring elephant movements and field squad activities closely. To maintain environmental equilibrium, Singhkhuntia highlighted the need for air quality improvements in industrial zones like Talcher and extensive afforestation in districts such as Balasore.
Crackdown on Illegal Activities and Inter-Departmental Coordination
Clear instructions were issued to officers to take stringent action against illegal mining and encroachment on forest lands. Forest Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Sharma underscored the urgency of expediting processes related to human-wildlife conflict resolution, livelihood generation, and legal clearances within the department.
Regional Insights and Collaborative Efforts
Heads from eight regional forest conservation circles—Angul, Baripada, Berhampur, Bhawanipatna, Koraput, Sambalpur, Rourkela, and Bhubaneswar—presented their challenges and achievements. Tourism officials also participated, discussing the importance of maintaining seamless coordination between the tourism and forest departments to promote sustainable ecotourism.
