A concerning series of unexplained forest fires has erupted over the past three evenings, scorching approximately 20 acres of precious woodland within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Thane. The repeated blazes have triggered significant alarm among environmental activists and residents inhabiting residential enclaves situated along the forest fringes.
Officials Confirm Damage and Ongoing Assessment
Forest department officials have confirmed that the collective spread of the blazes covered nearly 20 acres of forest land. A comprehensive and formal survey is currently underway to determine the precise extent of the damage inflicted upon the local flora and fauna, as well as to ascertain the exact area affected. The detailed findings from this assessment will be released to the public upon completion.
Timeline of the Fire Incidents
The first fire was reported on Sunday evening in the forest area opposite Gawandbaug. Forest response teams acted swiftly and managed to contain this initial blaze in a timely manner. However, a second, larger fire broke out late on Monday night, followed by a third blaze on Tuesday evening within the same forest range. According to disaster management officials, the flames from these subsequent fires were visible from distant locations such as Pawar Nagar and Mulla Baug.
Resident Concerns and Official Response
The regional disaster management cell in Thane reported being inundated with complaints from vigilant residents starting Monday night. Numerous residents from housing complexes bordering the forest stated they witnessed flames at multiple spots inside the jungle over the three-day period and promptly alerted the authorities.
"Luckily the smoke hasn't affected our buildings, but the repeated fires are deeply worrying. The blaze late on Monday night was one of the biggest we've seen in years," said Nitin Singh, a resident of Cosmos Lounge.
Another resident, who requested anonymity, raised suspicions about potential foul play, questioning if the incidents were the handiwork of a forest mafia, especially considering the increasing human encroachment and commercial activities infringing upon the forest area.
Environmental Activist Calls for Investigation
Environment activist Rohit Joshi, who has been at the forefront of addressing rising encroachments in the forest region, commented on the unusual nature of the fires. He stated that natural forest fires are highly unlikely in this specific region, emphasizing that the incident warrants a thorough and detailed investigation to determine the true cause.
Official Statement and Ongoing Probe
Range Forest Officer Mayur Survase confirmed the series of fire incidents and assured that forest teams responded with alacrity to contain the blazes. However, he clarified that the cause behind these repeated and mysterious outbreaks remains unknown and is currently under active investigation by the forest department.
