Moodbidri TMC Intensifies Zero-Waste Drive for Annual Kambala Festival
The Moodbidri Town Municipal Council (TMC) has launched a comprehensive campaign to ensure that the upcoming Koti Chennaya Jodukare Kambala, scheduled for January 31, is organized as a complete zero-waste event. This initiative builds upon the sustainable practices that have been implemented since the 2022–23 season, demonstrating a continued commitment to environmental stewardship.
Public Participation and Innovative Stalls
Shilpa S, environmental engineer at Moodbidri TMC, has made a heartfelt appeal to the public to actively support this green initiative. She encourages attendees to bring their own cloth bags, food containers, and water bottles, while also promoting the use of biodegradable alternatives such as carry bags, cups, glasses, and spoons.
In an exclusive statement to TOI, Shilpa revealed that TMC stalls at the venue will feature several engaging elements:
- Sale of manure produced from processed waste
- Live demonstrations on dry waste segregation
- Showcases of rainwater harvesting techniques
- Introduction to advanced waste management technologies
- Highlighting two specific composting methods for wet waste
Educational Activities and Infrastructure
To make waste management engaging for younger audiences, a theme-based snake-and-ladder game focusing on dry waste management will be installed at the venue. Additionally, a drinking water kiosk will encourage visitors to refill their own bottles, significantly reducing plastic waste generation.
The municipal council will also provide valuable information about faecal sludge treatment plants, educating the public about comprehensive waste management solutions beyond typical household waste.
Collaborative Efforts and Preparations
With approximately one lakh people expected to attend, the TMC has formed strategic partnerships with multiple organizations:
- Rotary Club Moodbidri
- Netaji Brigade Moodbidri
- Citizen volunteers and Swachh ambassadors
- CDD India
- Sahas NGO
- Various educational institutions providing volunteers
Following several preparatory meetings, organizers have declared the entire Kambala venue a plastic-free zone. Strategic placement of waste-collection bins across the premises and approach roads will ensure proper segregation and disposal of all materials.
Vendor Management and Sustainable Serving Solutions
Nagaraj Poojary, secretary of the Kambala Samithi, is taking proactive measures to ensure vendors comply with the zero-waste guidelines by avoiding single-use products. A dedicated team comprising a senior health inspector and five community mobilizers is working diligently to implement these sustainable practices throughout the event.
In a particularly traditional touch, arrangements are being made to serve all participants and visitors using banana leaves and areca plates, combining cultural authenticity with environmental responsibility.
Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns
Social media teams will be present at the venue to collect public feedback and spread awareness about Swachh Survekshan, emphasizing the crucial role of citizen participation in maintaining cleanliness standards. The TMC has already begun sharing awareness messages through its social media handles, creating momentum before the event even begins.
This comprehensive approach demonstrates how traditional cultural events can successfully integrate modern environmental practices, setting a benchmark for sustainable event management across the region.
