Forest officials in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, have launched an investigation into reports of migratory bird deaths in the vicinity of the Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary. The probe follows complaints lodged by farmers from nearby villages, including North Kaluvoor and Kadankulam, who raised concerns about the welfare of the avian visitors.
Farmer Allegations and Official Response
Farmers in the region have alleged that a number of migratory birds perished due to a severe lack of water supply originating from the Manimuthar Dam. They claim that the water scarcity in the area has created hostile conditions for the birds, leading to fatalities. However, district forest officials have provided a contrasting account based on their initial inspections.
During site visits to assess the situation, officials reported that no bird carcasses were recovered. "We visited the site and assessed the situation, but we can't find any carcasses of the birds, as they may have been scavenged by stray dogs. The species of the birds could not be determined because carcasses were not recovered," an official stated. This scavenging by stray dogs has complicated efforts to verify the farmers' claims and identify the specific species involved.
Water Scarcity and Bird Behavior
Officials have also cast doubt on the theory that water scarcity alone could account for the reported deaths. They explained that wetland birds, which include many migratory species, typically exhibit adaptive behavior by relocating to alternative water sources when levels in their current habitat decline. This natural resilience suggests other factors may be at play if deaths are indeed occurring.
Furthermore, authorities confirmed that there have been no reports of bird flu or any incidents of mass bird deaths in the area, alleviating some immediate health concerns. "If we receive information about bird deaths in the coming days, a veterinary team has been kept ready to ascertain the cause," the official added, highlighting proactive measures.
