Giant Python Rescued from Scrap Shop in Navi Mumbai's Uran Town

In a remarkable wildlife rescue operation, a massive 10.5-foot-long Indian rock python was safely extracted from a scrap shop in Uran town, Navi Mumbai, on Saturday. The dramatic incident highlights the increasing encounters between urban areas and wildlife in the region.

Swift Action by Sarpamitra Friends Of Nature Activists

The rescue was conducted by the dedicated team from Sarpamitra Friends Of Nature (FON), a group committed to wildlife protection and conservation. According to an FON member, the operation was initiated after they received an urgent call reporting a huge snake hiding among scrap metal wares at the shop.

"We had got a call that a huge snake was seen hiding among the scrap metal wares at the shop. The snake rescuers Nitin Gharat and Bhushan Mhatre led this operation," said the FON member, emphasizing the prompt response of the team.

Urban Encounter from Nearby Mangroves

Wildlife activists involved in the rescue provided insights into the python's likely origins. They informed that the reptile must have ventured towards the urban region from a nearby mangroves forest, possibly in search of prey. This migration underscores the shrinking habitats and the challenges faced by wildlife in rapidly urbanizing areas.

The presence of such a large snake in a commercial setting raises awareness about the importance of coexisting with local fauna and preserving natural ecosystems.

Record-Breaking Rescue in Uran

This rescue operation holds special significance as it marks the biggest python rescued from Uran in the past seven to eight years. The successful extraction without harm to the snake or humans demonstrates the expertise and dedication of the FON team.

Key points from the incident include:

  • The python measured an impressive 10.5 feet in length.
  • It was found concealed among scrap materials in a shop.
  • Rescuers Nitin Gharat and Bhushan Mhatre played pivotal roles.
  • The snake is believed to have originated from adjacent mangrove forests.

This event serves as a reminder of the vital work done by wildlife activists in safeguarding both animals and communities, fostering a balance between urban development and environmental conservation.
