Madurai Forest Division Commemorates World Wildlife Day with Community Focus

The Madurai forest division organized a significant event at the district collectorate on Tuesday to celebrate World Wildlife Day, aligning with the global theme "medical and aromatic plants: conserving health and livelihood." This gathering highlighted the critical intersection of ecological preservation and human well-being.

Honoring Conservation Champions with Awards and Recognition

Collector K J Praveen Kumar presided over the ceremony, presenting the Community Conservation Leadership Award to five distinguished individuals for their exemplary contributions to wildlife and habitat conservation. Each awardee received a cash prize of Rs 25,000, acknowledging their dedicated efforts.

  • P R Viswanath was honored for his contributions to wildlife conservation.
  • T Badrinarayanan received the award for wildlife conservation and research.
  • N Raveendran was acknowledged for nature conservation and awareness initiatives.
  • S Ramasamy Kamaya Naicker was celebrated for his efforts in nature conservation and awareness.

Engaging Youth and Educators in Conservation Efforts

The event placed a strong emphasis on education and community involvement. A total of 500 school students from 25 government schools across Madurai district participated in sensitization programs focused on wildlife conservation and biodiversity. These sessions aimed to instill a sense of environmental stewardship from a young age.

Additionally, twenty-five teachers who guided and coordinated students under this program were honored with an honorarium of Rs 2,000 each, along with certificates of appreciation. This recognition underscores the vital role educators play in fostering conservation awareness.

Workshops and Thematic Presentations on Ecological Topics

A comprehensive workshop on wetlands was conducted, featuring subject experts who discussed the ecological importance of wetlands, associated biodiversity, conservation challenges, and sustainable management practices. This session provided valuable insights into preserving these crucial ecosystems.

Special thematic presentations enriched the event, covering diverse topics:

  1. Snakes and their ecological importance, highlighting their role in maintaining ecological balance.
  2. Conservation of the Bengal fox and the golden jackal, focusing on protecting these species and their habitats.
  3. Diversity of butterfly species in the country, emphasizing their role as pollinators and environmental indicators.

Emphasis on Collective Responsibility and Future Commitments

Collector Praveen Kumar addressed the gathering, stressing the collective responsibility and need for sustained action towards wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation. He called for ongoing efforts to safeguard natural heritage for future generations.

The forest division reaffirmed its commitment to engaging communities, educational institutions, and conservation partners in these endeavors. The event was conducted by The Advanced Institute of Wildlife Conservation (AIWC), with other officials in attendance, showcasing a collaborative approach to environmental stewardship.
