Lucknow Cantonment Board Inks MOU to Promote Compostable PLA Products
In a significant move to reduce its carbon footprint and combat plastic pollution, the Lucknow Cantonment Board Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a private firm to promote the use of environmentally friendly products. This initiative focuses on items made from polylactic acid (PLA), such as bottles, pens, folders, and compostable garbage bags, which are designed to break down naturally without harming the environment.
Order Placed Ahead of New Manufacturing Unit
Following the MOU, Balrampur Bioyug, the green-products division of Balrampur Chini Mills, has received an order from the Lucknow Cantonment Board for these compostable products. This order was placed in anticipation of the commissioning of a new PLA manufacturing unit currently under construction at Kumbhi in Lakhimpur Kheri district.
Lucknow Cantonment is set to become one of the first defense institutions in India to formally integrate compostable PLA solutions into its daily operational use. This step marks a pioneering effort in adopting sustainable practices within military and defense-related establishments.
Commitment to Reducing Single-Use Plastics
Abhishek Rathour, CEO of the Lucknow Cantonment Board, emphasized the board's dedication to environmental sustainability. "We are committed to reducing single-use plastics and promoting alternatives that align with our green goals," he stated. This commitment reflects a broader trend towards eco-friendly initiatives in public institutions.
Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, highlighted the credibility and performance of sustainable materials. "The adoption of compostable PLA products demonstrates that sustainable materials are credible, performance-oriented solutions suitable for large-scale institutional use," she explained. This endorsement underscores the growing acceptance of biodegradable products in mainstream applications.
Key Benefits of the Initiative
- Environmental Impact: The use of PLA-based products helps in minimizing plastic waste and lowering the carbon footprint of the cantonment board.
- Innovation in Manufacturing: The upcoming PLA unit in Lakhimpur Kheri is expected to boost local production and support the green economy.
- Institutional Leadership: By adopting these solutions, Lucknow Cantonment sets an example for other defense and government bodies to follow suit in sustainability efforts.
This initiative not only addresses immediate environmental concerns but also paves the way for long-term sustainable practices in institutional operations across India.
