Kerala Experiences Contrasting Weather Patterns with Heavy Rains and Intense Heat
Kerala is currently facing a complex weather scenario characterized by heavy rainfall in certain districts alongside soaring temperatures and high humidity levels. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued crucial advisories for residents, highlighting the risks associated with direct sun exposure during peak hours.
Rainfall Records and Temperature Extremes
Significant rainfall was reported in Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts, with Konni and Kurudamannil receiving 7 centimeters of precipitation. Thiruvananthapuram Airport recorded 6 centimeters, while Neyyattinkara and Cherthala saw 4 centimeters. Despite these downpours, maximum temperatures remained high, hovering around 35°C in Kottayam, Kozhikode, Palakkad, and Punalur. Kannur Airport registered the highest temperature at 36°C.
Minimum temperatures showed a notable drop in Thiruvananthapuram district, with Punalur and Thiruvananthapuram Airport recording the lowest at 22°C. However, humidity levels ranged from 75% to 96%, significantly elevating the heat index and making conditions feel even hotter across several locations.
IMD's Meteorological Analysis and Warnings
The IMD has identified several weather systems influencing Kerala's climate. A cyclonic circulation is present over the Comorin area and its vicinity, with a trough extending from this circulation to Vidarbha via interior Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka, and Marathwada. Another trough runs from the Comorin area to the Lakshadweep area.
Additionally, an upper air cyclonic circulation is observed over the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast. Meanwhile, the upper air cyclonic circulation over south interior Karnataka and its neighborhood has become less marked. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has reinforced IMD's warnings, advising the public to avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Health and Safety Implications
The combination of high temperatures and extreme humidity poses serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and dehydration. Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. This weather pattern underscores the importance of heeding official advisories to ensure public safety amid fluctuating climatic conditions.
