Moradabad Man Critically Injured in Saudi Arabia by Military Projectile Amid Regional Conflict
A 27-year-old man from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, has been critically injured after a military projectile fell on a residential site in Saudi Arabia's Al-Kharj governorate, officials confirmed. The incident occurred during the ongoing Iran–US-Israel conflict, highlighting the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Details of the Incident and Victim's Background
The injured individual, identified as Mohd Azam, a resident of Jafraabad village in the Thakurdwara area of Moradabad, had traveled to Saudi Arabia approximately three-and-a-half years ago to work as a diesel mechanic. He is currently battling for his life in a hospital in Riyadh, with reports indicating he is on ventilator support in the intensive care unit.
Azam's brother, Kasim Ali, informed the media that the family learned about the incident through a phone call from one of Azam's colleagues. "I came to know that he is critical and is in ICU," Ali stated, expressing the family's distress. Azam had moved abroad in search of better livelihood opportunities and served as the primary financial support for his household.
Family's Appeal and Community Anxiety
The family has made a heartfelt appeal to the Indian government for assistance. "He had gone there to earn a livelihood. Now we are told he is badly injured and on ventilator. We are poor people and request the govt to help ensure his treatment and bring him back home," Ali added. Since the news broke, villagers in Moradabad have expressed anxiety, as many residents from the area also work in Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about their safety amid the conflict.
Family members have specifically appealed to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure proper medical treatment for Azam and facilitate his earliest possible return to India.
Official Statements and Broader Impact
According to the official spokesperson of Saudi Civil Defence, the department responded on Sunday to the fall of a military projectile on a residential site belonging to a maintenance and cleaning company in Al-Kharj governorate. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Bangladeshi nationals and injuries to 11 Bangladeshi residents, in addition to Mohd Azam, along with material damage to the property.
The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia provided an update on social media platform X, stating, "It is a matter of relief that there has been no Indian fatality in the unfortunate incident at Al Kharj." The embassy added that a counsellor visited Al-Kharj and met with the injured Indian national, confirming that Azam is receiving treatment at a government hospital in the area.
Context of the Iran–US-Israel Conflict
This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, involving conflicts between Iran, the US, and Israel. Recent developments include attacks such as the UAE embassy in Iraq being targeted and Hezbollah drones striking Israel, contributing to regional instability. The fallout from these conflicts has also impacted global supply chains, with disruptions reported in commercial LPG supplies affecting hotels in major cities and concerns over India's oil, LPG, and LNG supplies.
As the situation evolves, the safety of expatriate workers in conflict zones remains a critical issue, prompting calls for increased diplomatic efforts and support from home countries.
