IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Cold Waves Across Northern India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant yellow alert for cold wave conditions affecting several northern states of India. The alert specifically targets Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and other parts of northern India on Sunday, January 25. This weather warning comes as the region braces for a period of intense climatic activity.

Weather Forecast for January 25-28

According to the latest IMD bulletin, cold wave conditions are expected to prevail in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan on both January 25 and January 26. Additionally, dense to very dense fog conditions are likely during morning and night hours in some isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 25 to January 26.

The weather department has also predicted rainfall to heavy rainfall at many places across the country on January 26 and January 27. An intense Western Disturbance is set to impact the Western Himalayan region from January 26 to January 28, bringing light to moderate rainfall at many places and isolated heavy rain or snowfall specifically on January 27.

Northern Region: Beyond the cold wave, the IMD forecasts hailstorm activity over Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on January 27, and over Uttarakhand on January 27 and 28. Thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan on January 27.

Southern Region: In contrast, the southern parts of India are expected to experience heavy rainfall. Parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to be lashed by heavy rainfall on Sunday, January 25. Thunderstorm with lightning and winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is also predicted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on January 24 and 25, and over Kerala and Mahe on January 26.

The IMD has provided specific details regarding the anticipated precipitation. Light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places over the Western Himalayan region between January 26 and 28. Isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is particularly forecast for January 27, 2026. This weather pattern is attributed to the active Western Disturbance influencing the region.
