Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) has voiced profound concern following the tragic death of Marqas Masih, a young Christian laborer who was found dead under exploitative conditions at a rural farmhouse in Sargodha, Pakistan. This incident has reignited urgent discussions about bonded labor, the safety of religious minorities, and the accessibility of justice in the country.
Details of the Incident and Investigation
According to HRFP, their fact-finding team responded to a distress call via the REAT Helpline and visited the site in District Sargodha, where Marqas Masih had been employed for over four years by Muhammad Mohsin Kharal and his father Muhammad Basharat Kharal. The victim was discovered deceased at his workplace, prompting immediate action from his family and local Christian community.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed by the victim's elder brother, Dilshad Masih, at Karana Police Station under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The case was officially registered on March 4, 2026, after protests highlighted initial reluctance by authorities to act, allegedly due to the suspects' local influence.
Family Testimonies and Allegations
Dilshad Masih and the victim's mother, Shahnaz Bibi, recounted to the HRFP team that they received a phone call from Muhammad Basharat on March 3, claiming Marqas had died by suicide. However, upon arriving at the farmhouse, they found him hanging in a cattle shed with no signs of life. The family observed visible marks of physical violence on his body and firmly rejected the suicide narrative.
The body was subsequently taken to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in Sargodha for forensic examination. Based on evidence collection, interviews with witnesses, and consultations with police, the HRFP team concluded that the death was likely a murder staged as suicide, potentially motivated by the victim's Christian identity.
HRFP's Advocacy and Broader Implications
Naveed Walter, President of HRFP, has called for a fair, impartial, and transparent legal process, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of the victim's family and witnesses. He stated that justice for Marqas Masih is crucial not only for his grieving family but also for the protection of vulnerable minority workers across Pakistan.
Walter highlighted that workplace violations against minority employees are not isolated incidents, citing past cases involving murder, harassment, sexual abuse, and blasphemy accusations. HRFP has committed to vigorously pursuing this case with the family's assistance until justice is served and threats to withdraw the case are addressed.
