Unseasonal Hailstorm Lashes Kodagu District, Causing Widespread Damage

In a sudden and severe weather event, parts of Kodagu district in Karnataka were battered by an unseasonal hailstorm on Monday night, resulting in significant damage to property and agriculture. The unexpected downpour, accompanied by heavy rain and hailstones, has left a trail of destruction across several villages.

Widespread Impact Across Multiple Villages

The hailstorm was reported in various areas, including Madikeri, which experienced thundershowers. More intense activity was recorded in Chikka Aluvara, Torenur, Hebbale, and Shirangala within the Torenur gram panchayat. Additionally, Guddehosur near Kushalnagar witnessed hailstorm rainfall on Monday evening, exacerbating the situation.

The storm's fury was particularly devastating in Shirangala village, where a coconut tree collapsed onto farmers' houses, causing structural damage. The roofs of these homes were severely impacted, and stored agricultural produce suffered losses. Rice and millet crops in the vicinity were also damaged, compounding the economic blow to local farmers.

Detailed Accounts of Damage and Response

This year's first rain, which lasted over half an hour in the evening, brought hailstones that lashed surrounding villages. One of the most affected was SH Sundara, a resident of Chikkanayakana Hosahalli in Shirangala. The storm completely destroyed the roof of his house and damaged approximately 40 bags of paddy and millet stored inside.

Similarly, in the same village, properties belonging to Harish and Palguna were hit when a coconut tree fell on them. The impact damaged not only the house but also a smokestack shed. A new tractor parked in front of the house was badly damaged due to the falling tree. Fortunately, family members inside the house were safe, and forest staff promptly removed the fallen tree.

The incident also led to the collapse of an electricity pole near the house, potentially disrupting power supply in the area.

Official Assessment and Inspection

In response to the damage, a team of officials visited the affected spots to conduct inspections. The group included Tahsildar Kiran Gouraiah, revenue inspector Santhosh, village accountant Gurudarshan, panchayat development officer GR Hemalatha, secretary Mansoor Khan, and forest staff. Their assessment aims to evaluate the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts for the impacted residents.

This unseasonal weather event highlights the vulnerability of agricultural communities to sudden climatic changes, underscoring the need for preparedness and support systems in rural areas.
