Gurgaon Weather Update: IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert as Temperatures Plummet
Residents of Gurgaon woke up to gloomy, overcast skies on Tuesday morning, with rainfall commencing around 10:30 AM as dark clouds and thunderstorm activity enveloped the city, blocking sunshine throughout the morning hours.
IMD Nowcast Warning for Gurgaon and Haryana
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning specifically for Gurgaon and multiple parts of Haryana, alerting residents about potential gusty winds reaching 30–40 kilometers per hour accompanied by lightning and light to moderate thunderstorms. In isolated pockets across the state, wind speeds could escalate to 40–60 kilometers per hour, posing additional risks.
Seven-Day Weather Forecast and Temperature Drop
In its extended seven-day forecast, IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations in Haryana on January 28th, with precipitation becoming more widespread by February 1st. Further isolated rain is likely on January 31st and February 2nd. The meteorological department also cautioned about a significant drop in minimum temperatures by 3–5 degrees Celsius over the next two days. Another western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India starting from the night of January 30th.
According to IMD officials, the current weather pattern is driven by an active western disturbance visible as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and adjoining regions, with a trough extending across northwest India.
Temperature Records and Rainfall Data
Gurgaon recorded a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, marking the lowest reading in Haryana. The maximum temperature settled at 16.7 degrees Celsius, which is appreciably below normal levels. IMD data revealed that the city received approximately 3 millimeters of rainfall during the day.
The meteorological centre in Chandigarh reported that average maximum temperatures across Haryana fell by about 2.1 degrees Celsius compared to Monday and were nearly 3.7 degrees Celsius below seasonal norms.
Impact on Daily Life and Commute
Several areas of Gurgaon experienced steady drizzle through late morning, resulting in slowed traffic and disruption during peak-hour commutes. While the rainfall helped settle dust particles in the atmosphere, increased humidity levels made ground conditions feel noticeably colder.
Safety Advisories and Agricultural Concerns
For January 27th, Haryana remains under a combined alert for thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and cold wave conditions at isolated places. IMD has issued specific safety guidelines:
- Stay indoors during lightning activity
- Avoid taking shelter under trees
- Secure loose objects that could be displaced by squally winds
Farmers have been cautioned about potential crop damage due to gusty winds and isolated hail occurrences.
Extended Weather Outlook
Cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall may persist over Gurgaon throughout Wednesday. Meanwhile, parts of Noida experienced a brief hailstorm in the evening following afternoon thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
Ankit Kaushik, a media professional residing in Sector 16, described being caught in a hailstorm around 5 PM near Sector 18. "Rain accompanied by hail shower lasted for roughly 10 minutes. It slowed traffic in the area as bikers and people rushed to take shelter under flyovers and bus stops," he reported.
