Gujarat's First Hi-Tech Nursery to Cultivate 10 Lakh Saplings Annually in Banaskantha

In a significant environmental initiative, Gujarat is set to establish its first hi-tech nursery in Davas, Banaskantha district. Spanning 13 acres of land, this state-of-the-art facility will produce more than 10 lakh saplings each year, with a focus on rare and endangered plant species. The project, valued at Rs 3.5 crore, is a collaborative effort supervised by the Gujarat forest department and the social forestry department.

Advanced Facilities for Optimal Plant Growth

The nursery will incorporate cutting-edge technology to ensure high-quality, disease-free, and robust plant production. Key features include a mist chamber, germination chamber, polyhouse, and net house, all designed to create controlled environments that foster optimal growth even under adverse weather conditions. Special techniques such as soil-less media cultivation will be employed to conserve plant species nearing extinction, promoting faster and healthier development.

Comprehensive Conservation and Educational Components

Alongside the nursery, a seed bank and seed processing unit will be established to scientifically store rare and valuable seeds for long-term preservation. This initiative aims to give social forestry a new direction by enhancing afforestation efforts across the state. Additionally, a nursery information centre will provide guidance to students, farmers, and environmental enthusiasts on plant cultivation, afforestation, and natural conservation.

Supporting Large-Scale Afforestation and Environmental Balance

The project will also include a vermicomposting unit to produce organic fertiliser, ensuring healthy plant growth. Methods to develop tall, strong saplings will be implemented to support large-scale tree-planting programmes throughout Gujarat. Officials emphasized that this nursery will serve as an exemplary model for environmental conservation, significantly increasing the state's green cover while maintaining ecological balance and contributing to the preservation of endangered plant species.

In a statement released on Friday, the government highlighted that the main objective is to leverage advanced technology and scientific methods to bolster afforestation and enhance environmental protection efforts. This hi-tech nursery represents a major step forward in Gujarat's commitment to sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
