Large parts of Gujarat experienced severe heatwave conditions on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring well above normal levels and residents struggling against an unusually early onset of summer. The intense baking heat has prompted weather officials to issue warnings about continued discomfort in coastal regions.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the State
Rajkot recorded the highest maximum temperature in the Saurashtra region at 42°C, which is nearly 7.7 degrees above the normal range for this time of year. Ahmedabad sizzled at 41.4°C, approximately 7.2 degrees above normal, while Bhuj reached 41°C and Amreli touched 40.3°C. Most strikingly, Diu—the Union territory and popular getaway destination for Gujaratis—recorded temperatures as much as 10 degrees above normal levels.
Several districts have already crossed the critical 40°C mark in the first week of March, indicating what meteorologists fear could be a prolonged and harsh summer season ahead. The scorching afternoon heat forced many residents to remain indoors, resulting in unusually quiet roads and markets during peak hours as people avoided venturing outside.
IMD Issues Heat and Humidity Warning
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), discomfort due to hot and humid conditions is very likely to prevail over coastal areas of the Gujarat region and Saurashtra-Kutch in the coming days. Weather officials confirmed that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed at many places in Saurashtra-Kutch, while several pockets of the Gujarat region also experienced intense heat.
The districts of Rajkot, Surendranagar, Keshod, Bhavnagar, Porbandar, and Kutch all recorded official heatwave conditions. In the Gujarat region, specific areas including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Deesa, Surat, and Vadodara experienced particularly sweltering conditions that tested residents' endurance.
Impact on Daily Life and Local Economy
The extreme weather conditions created contrasting impacts across cities and towns. While the heat kept many indoors, roadside vendors selling traditional cooling beverages like sugarcane juice, buttermilk, and tender coconuts reported brisk business as people sought relief from the oppressive temperatures.
Outdoor workers faced particularly challenging conditions. Construction workers and delivery personnel were seen covering their faces with scarves and cloth to shield themselves from the hot, dry winds sweeping across the region. The early onset of such intense heat has raised concerns about water availability, agricultural impacts, and public health as the state prepares for what could be an extended period of elevated temperatures.
The meteorological department continues to monitor the situation closely, with forecasts suggesting that residents should prepare for continued heatwave conditions in the immediate future as summer establishes its grip on the region much earlier than typical seasonal patterns.
