Multi-Agency Survey of Toyyar Lake Buffer Zone Commences in Goa
In a significant development in Chimbel, Goa, a comprehensive joint survey of the entire buffer zone surrounding Toyyar Lake was initiated on Saturday. The collaborative effort involves multiple key stakeholders, including the Goa State Wetland Authority, the Goa State Biodiversity Board, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, the National Institute of Oceanography, and the state's water resources department. Notably, protesting villagers from the local community actively participated in this crucial exercise, highlighting their deep involvement in the conservation efforts.
Survey Details and Technical Examination
The officials meticulously surveyed the precise boundary of Toyyar Lake during the initial phase of the operation. Additionally, they documented the highest water mark, which indicates where rainwater naturally trickles down into the lake during the monsoon season. This technical assessment is vital for understanding the lake's hydrological dynamics and ecological footprint. The survey team is scheduled to resume its work on Sunday, focusing specifically on delineating the zone of influence around the wetland, a critical parameter for environmental protection.
Villagers' Determination and Historical Context
Govind Shirodkar, the chairperson of the Chimbel Wetland Committee, expressed immense pride in the unity and resilience of the villagers. "We have been on a hunger strike for almost a month, and I am proud that all of our villagers united for one purpose, which is to protect our lake," Shirodkar stated emphatically. He further emphasized, "This lake is our livelihood, and we will do everything in our power to safeguard it." The residents assert that Toyyar Lake historically served as an essential source of water supply for the surrounding areas during the Portuguese era, underscoring its long-standing cultural and practical significance.
Demands and Political Tensions
During a meeting with the Chief Minister on Wednesday, the villagers strongly urged for a re-notification of the wetland's demarcation through a fresh, comprehensive survey by the authorities. RG functionary Ajay Kolekar voiced the community's unwavering stance, declaring, "Irrespective of whether the mall site and Prashasan Stambh fall under the zone of influence or not, we do not want this project here. We want to protect our lake and our wetland." Kolekar accused the Chief Minister of being the mastermind behind the destruction of the lake and biodiversity, alleging that the village was sold for commercial purposes. He warned, "If he thinks we are going to stay quiet, he is wrong to do so."
Future Protests and Conservation Proposals
In addition to the survey, the villagers have demanded the creation of a biodiversity park to protect the zone of interest, aiming to preserve the ecological integrity of the area. To amplify their message, they plan to stage a protest outside the residence of Renewable Energy Minister Shripad Naik on Sunday. Furthermore, a symbolic protest is scheduled at the Republic Day parade site on January 26, demonstrating their continued commitment to the cause of wetland conservation and environmental justice in Goa.
