Fourth Wildlife Fatality in Two Months Heightens Human-Animal Conflict Concerns in Nainital
A 60-year-old woman was tragically killed in a suspected wild animal attack in the Bhimtal block of Nainital district, with her mutilated body discovered in a forest ravine. This incident represents the fourth such death reported from the same block within the past two months, significantly escalating concerns regarding the intensifying human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Search Operation Launched After Woman Fails to Return from Forest
Ganga Devi had ventured into the forest on Monday to collect fodder for her livestock but did not return by evening. Her concerned family promptly alerted fellow villagers and the forest department, initiating an immediate search operation to locate her.
Body Found with Injuries Consistent with Predatory Animal Attack
Forest officials reported that her body was recovered the following morning from a dense and inaccessible forest patch, approximately 3 kilometers from her residence. The body exhibited deep wounds and injuries that are consistent with an attack by a predatory animal. Local residents who arrived at the scene indicated that the pattern of injuries strongly suggested the involvement of a big cat.
Range officer Vijay Melkani stated, "It is not yet clear whether the attack was by a leopard or a tiger, but it is confirmed to be a wild animal attack." The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to gather further details.
Residents Express Fear and Anger Over Inadequate Safety Measures
The tragic incident has triggered widespread fear and anger among local residents, who have alleged inadequate preventive measures despite the repeated attacks occurring in recent weeks. Villagers are demanding increased forest patrolling, the installation of trap cameras, and concrete steps to ensure safety in forest fringe areas.
Local representative Devendra Chanautia emphasized that rising leopard encounters have placed lives at significant risk and called for stronger intervention from authorities if the threat continues unabated.
Forest Department's Response and Safety Advisory
In response to the escalating situation, forest officials have announced that cameras are being installed in high-movement zones and locations are being identified for placing cages to capture the animal. Residents have been strongly advised to avoid entering forests alone and to move in groups for enhanced safety.
As per established norms, immediate financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to the bereaved family to support them during this difficult time.
