Gorakhpur: Around 250 youths and students participated in an eco-brick training and exhibition programme organised under the 'Neel Gagan Purvanchal–Eco Warrior' campaign, jointly run by Purvanchal Youth Welfare Association (PYWA) and Flyup Foundation on Friday. The initiative focused on spreading awareness about environmental conservation, plastic waste management and sustainable development.
What Are Eco-Bricks?
Eco-bricks are prepared by tightly filling used plastic waste into plastic bottles, creating durable blocks that can be used to make tables, stools, flower pots, dustbins and other utility structures. This method effectively repurposes non-biodegradable waste into useful items.
Progress and Impact
Organisers said nearly one quintal of plastic waste has already been recycled to create eco-friendly items and installations. More than 200 eco-bricks have been prepared so far and will be used in the development of a proposed eco-park featuring eco-brick structures, seating areas, artistic installations and plantation zones. The campaign aims to turn plastic waste into valuable resources while promoting environmental stewardship among the youth.
The training session included hands-on demonstrations on how to properly pack plastic bottles to achieve structural strength. Participants also learned about the environmental hazards of plastic pollution and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste. The exhibition showcased various products made from eco-bricks, inspiring attendees to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
PYWA and Flyup Foundation plan to expand the campaign to other districts, organising similar workshops and encouraging community participation in waste management. The eco-park is expected to serve as a model for sustainable urban development, demonstrating how waste can be transformed into functional and aesthetic structures.
