Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Issues Stringent Directives on Waste Management

Deputy Commissioner Snehal R has issued a series of strict directives to officials in Dharwad, focusing on comprehensive waste management enforcement and public education initiatives. The orders were delivered during a district-level monitoring committee meeting held at the new conference hall of the DC's office on Tuesday.

Key Directives for Waste Management Enforcement

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized several critical measures that must be implemented immediately:

  • Strict enforcement of waste segregation at source to ensure proper disposal from households and businesses
  • Guaranteed door-to-door collection services across all urban areas
  • Immediate action on complaints regarding waste burning to prevent environmental damage
  • Penal action against violators of waste management rules, including both individuals and industries

Focus on Plastic Waste Management

The meeting specifically reviewed the implementation of PET bottle waste management under plastic waste management rules. DC Snehal stressed the urgent need to curb single-use plastic consumption throughout the district.

"We must intensify public awareness campaigns and educate citizens on proper waste management practices," she stated during the meeting. The directives include promoting alternatives to plastic materials and strengthening solid waste management units across urban local bodies.

Environmental Walkathon Raises Awareness

Coinciding with these administrative measures, students and members of 'Parisarakkagi Naavu' participated in an Environmental Walkathon in Dharwad on Tuesday. The event aimed at creating awareness about proper waste management practices among citizens.

The walkathon commenced from the Landfill in Hosayallapur and concluded at the DC's office premises, symbolizing the community's commitment to environmental protection.

Additional Environmental Protection Measures

Beyond waste management, DC Snehal addressed broader environmental concerns:

  1. Preventing wastewater from entering stormwater drains to protect water quality
  2. Ensuring the safety of drinking water sources throughout the district
  3. Conducting regular spot visits by officials to address public grievances related to waste disposal
  4. Establishing timely response mechanisms for public complaints about waste management issues

The Deputy Commissioner's comprehensive approach combines strict enforcement with public education, recognizing that sustainable waste management requires both regulatory measures and community participation. These initiatives represent a significant step toward improving Dharwad's environmental health and waste management infrastructure.
