Delhi Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Rain and Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting significant rainfall and a notable drop in temperatures from Wednesday night through Friday. The capital city is expected to experience multiple spells of light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour.

Detailed Forecast and Temperature Trends

According to meteorological officials, the anticipated rainfall is due to the influence of a western disturbance. While Wednesday night may see only very light rain or drizzle, Thursday and Friday are predicted to bring more substantial precipitation. This weather pattern is expected to cause daytime temperatures to decrease considerably.

The maximum temperature, which was recorded at 31.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday (near normal for this season), is forecast to dip by 3-4 degrees by Friday. Specifically, temperatures are likely to fall to around 29-31 degrees Celsius on Thursday and further decline to 27-29 degrees Celsius by Friday. The overcast skies and rainfall will provide a cooling effect across the region.

The minimum temperature settled at 15.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which is one degree below normal. It is projected to remain between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius by Thursday, potentially dropping to around 14-16 degrees Celsius by Saturday.

Context of Recent Weather Patterns

This forecast comes as a relief following a period of above-normal temperatures in March. Delhi experienced six consecutive days from March 7 to 12 with mercury levels soaring above 35 degrees Celsius, peaking at a season high of 36.8 degrees Celsius on March 11. Although rain on Sunday provided some respite, the upcoming weather system promises more sustained cooling.

Air Quality and Additional Considerations

Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality continues to remain in the moderate zone, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 189 recorded on Tuesday, up from 119 on Monday. According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi—the forecasting body under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences—the AQI is likely to stay moderate until March 20 and for six days thereafter.

The combination of rainfall and lower temperatures is expected to improve overall atmospheric conditions, offering residents a break from the recent heatwave-like conditions.
