Dehradun Municipal Corporation to Install 30 Plastic Bottle Crushers for Waste Management
Dehradun to Get 30 Plastic Bottle Crushers for Waste Recycling

The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has announced a significant environmental initiative aimed at tackling the growing problem of plastic waste in the city. In a move to promote sustainable waste management, the civic body is set to install 30 plastic bottle crushers at various locations across Dehradun.

First Installation on Civic Premises

The inaugural unit of this project will be established on the premises of the municipal corporation itself, serving as a model for the community. Chief Health Officer Dr. Avinash Khanna confirmed that the work order for this ambitious project has already been issued, marking a crucial step forward in Dehradun's waste management efforts.

How the Crushers Will Function

These specialized machines will accept empty plastic bottles from the public, crush them into compact pieces, and then send the material for proper recycling. Dr. Khanna expressed optimism about the timeline, stating, "We hope the machines will start functioning by March." This represents the first installation of plastic bottle crushers in Dehradun, setting a precedent for future environmental initiatives.

Public-Private Partnership Model

The implementation follows a collaborative approach where the Dehradun Municipal Corporation will provide the necessary land for installing the crushers, while a private third-party operator will be responsible for their operation and maintenance. This partnership model aims to ensure efficient management and sustainability of the project.

Focus on Source Segregation

Municipal officials emphasize that this initiative is specifically designed to encourage source segregation of plastic waste at the community level. The crushers will exclusively process plastic bottles, which constitute a substantial portion of the plastic waste generated in Dehradun. This waste originates from various sources including households, commercial establishments, and public events.

Addressing Dehradun's Waste Challenge

Dehradun currently generates over 450 metric tonnes of waste annually, presenting a significant management challenge for municipal authorities. A notable gap in current waste management practices is the lack of source segregation, which has prevented accurate estimates of plastic waste generation specifically. The introduction of these crushers is expected to provide valuable data while simultaneously reducing plastic pollution.

This comprehensive approach to plastic waste management represents a proactive step by the Dehradun Municipal Corporation toward creating a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
