Cyclone Senyar Triggers Weather Alert for Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The India Meteorological Department has issued a significant weather alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a cyclonic circulation intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system, identified as Cyclone Senyar, is expected to strengthen from November 21, according to official statements released on Thursday.
Heavy Rainfall and Rough Sea Conditions Expected
Heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring between 7 to 20 centimeters is very likely at one or two places in the Nicobar Islands, while the Andaman Islands are expected to receive heavy rainfall between 7 to 11 centimeters. The IMD has warned that sea conditions are likely to become rough due to the developing weather system.
Authorities have raised Local Cautionary Signal-3 at Port Blair Port as a precautionary measure. The alert specifically mentions the possibility of surging waves, prompting warnings for boat owners, island residents, and tourists to exercise extreme caution while operating vessels and during recreational activities.
Travel Disruptions and Safety Advisories
Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea along and off the North Andaman Sea due to the likelihood of high waves until November 23. This advisory comes as a preventive measure to ensure public safety during the cyclonic activity.
The Directorate of Shipping Services is likely to reschedule the sailing of inter-island vessels in response to the IMD's weather advisory. Harbor and vehicle ferry services operating at Chatham, Bambooflat, Dundas Point, Hopetown, and Phoenix Bay may face sudden disruptions or suspensions depending on weather conditions, officials confirmed.
Residents and visitors to the region are urged to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and follow all safety guidelines issued by local authorities during this period of adverse weather conditions.
