Chennai Weather Update: Rainfall Expected This Weekend After Dry Spell

Residents of Chennai may finally see a break from the recent dry and warm conditions as meteorological authorities predict the return of rainfall over the weekend. The India Meteorological Department has issued a forecast indicating light to moderate intensity showers for Saturday, bringing potential relief from the persistent heat.

IMD Bulletin Details Rainfall Patterns

According to an official IMD bulletin, Chennai and its suburbs are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. The sky conditions are expected to be partly cloudy throughout the period. Temperature readings are projected to remain relatively stable, with maximum temperatures hovering between 30–31°C and minimum temperatures around 24°C.

"The city and the suburbs may receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas. The sky may be partly cloudy. Temperatures may be at a maximum of 30–31°C and a minimum of around 24°C," the IMD bulletin stated clearly.

Weather Systems Driving the Rainfall

Meteorologists attribute the anticipated showers to two primary weather systems. A weakening low-pressure area combined with another potential low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger the rainfall activity. Despite these atmospheric changes, daytime temperatures are not forecast to see any significant deviation from current levels.

Regional Rainfall Distribution

While Chennai prepares for moderate showers, weather patterns show distinct regional variations. Southern districts of Tamil Nadu may experience heavier rainfall activity, with precipitation intensity gradually decreasing as one moves northward toward Chennai and surrounding regions.

Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, provided additional context: "Southern districts may receive heavy rainfall, with intensity gradually reducing northwards. Chennai and surrounding areas may receive light to moderate spells between February 21 and 23."

This rainfall forecast comes after several consecutive days of dry and warm weather in the Chennai metropolitan area, marking a potential shift in seasonal patterns as February progresses toward March.
