Elderly Villager Severely Injured in Elephant Encounter in Chhattisgarh
A 75-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being attacked by an elephant in the Bakaruma forest range of Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred when the victim, identified as Lalkuram Oraon, a resident of Sarsamar village, ventured towards the forest around 6 am and unexpectedly encountered the pachyderm.
Details of the Forest Attack
According to forest department officials, Lalkuram Oraon had entered compartment number 149 of the reserve forest under the Dharamjaigarh forest division when he suddenly came face to face with the elephant. The animal immediately chased him and struck him forcefully with its trunk, causing severe injuries. During the attack, Lalkuram managed to raise an alarm, which prompted the elephant to retreat back into the dense forest.
Villagers who heard the commotion rushed to the scene and promptly informed the forest authorities. The injured man was quickly shifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Forest officials confirmed that his family has been provided with immediate financial assistance to help cover medical expenses and support during this difficult time.
Presence of Elephant Herds in the Area
Forest authorities have revealed that two separate elephant herds are currently moving through the Bakaruma range, creating a heightened risk of human-wildlife conflict. One herd consisting of seven elephants has been roaming the area for several days, while another group of eight elephants entered the region from the Pathalgaon side just on Tuesday night. This brings the total number of elephants in the vicinity to approximately fifteen across the two herds.
Officials suspect that the attacking elephant may have strayed away from one of these herds, leading to the dangerous encounter. The forest department has been actively alerting villagers about the elephant presence through public announcements in affected villages and maintaining continuous surveillance on the movements of both herds.
