Xi warns Trump of 'clashes' over Taiwan issue

Taiwan has once again emerged as a major flashpoint between China and the United States, with Beijing issuing a stark warning to Washington. During talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Xi cautioned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts.”

Trump avoids Taiwan question

When repeatedly asked whether Taiwan was discussed during the summit, President Trump sidestepped the question. Instead, he focused on general remarks about his meeting with Xi, stating, “It’s great. Great place, incredible. China is beautiful.” Trump made these comments during his visit to the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, alongside Xi.

Beijing’s firm stance

According to a readout from China’s foreign ministry, Xi Jinping emphasized that the “Taiwan question” remains the most critical issue in US-China relations. Xi stated, “‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water.” He further warned that if the issue is not “handled properly,” the two nations “will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”

US response

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to sidestep direct commentary on China’s warning but told media that Washington’s stance on Taiwan has not changed. He also cautioned Beijing against using force. “US policy on the issue of Taiwan is unchanged as of today and as of the meeting that we had here today. It was raised. They always raise it on their side. We always make clear our position, and we move on to the other topics,” Rubio said in an interview with NBC News while traveling with Trump in China. He added that it would be “a terrible mistake” for China to attempt to take Taiwan by force.
