A tragic incident unfolded in Dharmapuri district early Sunday morning when a wild elephant attacked and killed a farmer guarding his crops. The victim, identified as 70-year-old K Maharajan from Kullatrimpatti, lost his life on his own agricultural land.
Details of the Fatal Attack
Maharajan had been farming on land that sits right next to the Pennagaram reserve forest. To protect his crops from wild animals, he built a small hut on the farm and often spent nights there. This routine turned deadly in the early hours of Sunday.
Around 1:30 AM, a wild elephant suddenly attacked the hut. Maharajan was inside at the time. The elephant caused grievous injuries, leading to his immediate death at the spot.
Discovery and Response
Other farmers discovered the scene later that morning when they arrived for work. They quickly alerted Maharajan's family members and contacted the Pennagaram forest department.
Forest department personnel rushed to the location. They recovered the body and transported it to Pennagaram Government Hospital for a postmortem examination. Officials confirmed the cause of death as the elephant attack.
