Residents of Thiruverumbur in Trichy have appealed to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government to expedite the land acquisition process for constructing service roads along the Trichy-Thanjavur national highway (NH). The demand comes amid growing concerns over frequent accidents on the highway, which have left local communities in distress.
Previous Governments Failed to Deliver
Addressing reporters on Monday, residents expressed disappointment with previous elected representatives who failed to fulfill their promises. They specifically criticized the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for delaying and ultimately collapsing the project by proposing an expensive elevated corridor as an alternative. According to the residents, this alternative was impractical and led to further delays.
Demands from the Current MLA
The residents urged Thiruverumbur MLA Navalpattu Viji, representing the TVK, to honor his election promise and ensure the completion of the service road project within his term. They emphasized that the state government must prioritize this pending infrastructure, which is crucial for lakhs of residents living in more than 10 wards of the city.
Specific Requirements for Service Roads
S Sakthivel, chief organizer of the Federation for Retrieval of Trichy Palpannai-Thuvakudi Service Road, outlined the key requirements. "Between Thiruverumbur Road over Bridge (RoB) and Palpannai junction, we need service roads continuously on both sides of the highway. Safe zones for pedestrians and two-wheelers to cross the Trichy-Thanjavur NH and adequate space to halt city buses must be ensured while laying service roads," he said.
The residents stressed that the service roads are essential to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow. They also called for proper pedestrian crossings and bus bays to enhance safety and convenience for commuters. The demand has gained momentum as the highway sees heavy traffic, including vehicles traveling between Trichy and Thanjavur.
