Kolkata Monsoon Arrival Uncertain Despite Early Kerala Onset Forecast
Kolkata Monsoon Arrival Uncertain Despite Kerala Onset

Kolkata: Weather officials in the city stated on Friday that it remains premature to forecast the exact arrival date of the southwest monsoon in Kolkata, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an early onset over Kerala. The IMD has announced that the monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26, with a model error margin of plus or minus four days. The normal onset date for the monsoon in Kerala is June 1.

Normal Arrival Date in Kolkata

According to meteorological records, June 10 is considered the standard date for the monsoon's arrival in Kolkata. However, officials emphasize that a precise prediction for the city must await the actual onset over Kerala. There is no direct one-to-one correlation between the Kerala onset and the monsoon's arrival in Kolkata, as noted by HB Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata.

Factors Affecting Monsoon Progress

The monsoon's progression from Kerala to Kolkata depends on various meteorological factors, including wind patterns, pressure systems, and atmospheric conditions. While an early onset in Kerala often raises hopes for an early arrival in other parts of the country, the relationship is not straightforward. Biswas explained that the monsoon's movement is influenced by multiple variables, and local conditions in Kolkata play a crucial role.
