Empty Local Train Derails at Dombivli Station, Disrupts Central Railway Services

Suburban services on Central Railway were severely disrupted for nearly three hours on Monday morning after a coach of an empty local train derailed on the down line at Platform No. 1A of Dombivli railway station during peak hours. The incident occurred at approximately 8:10 AM, causing significant delays and stranding numerous commuters during the busy office rush.

Details of the Derailment Incident

Railway officials confirmed that the empty rake was heading towards Kalyan when one of its compartments slipped off the tracks. Fortunately, since the train was not carrying any passengers, no injuries were reported. The derailment affected at least two down line local trains, which were subsequently diverted to minimise disruption to the suburban network.

Impact on Commuter Services

The sudden disruption had a substantial impact on suburban services, leaving several commuters stranded and delayed. Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Dr Swapnil Nila, provided clarification on the operational effects. "Two trains on the down line were impacted due to the incident but were later diverted. The up line services, particularly those operating from Kalyan to Mumbai during the peak hours, remained unaffected," he stated.

Restoration of Railway Operations

Railway officials worked diligently to address the situation. The re-railment operation was successfully completed at around 10:50 AM. Following this, train services on the affected track gradually resumed, allowing normal operations to be restored after the nearly three-hour disruption.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of suburban railway networks during peak hours and the importance of swift response mechanisms to minimise commuter inconvenience.
